The Joe Gardi Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to two graduating Staples football players — one on offense, one on defense — as they head to college. It was established in June 2010, days after Gardi's passing, by Anthony F. and Carole Mazzarella. In their words: "Joe was always about the kids, whether it was his children, grandchildren or players."
Joe Gardi was a New York Jets assistant and defensive coordinator (1976–1984) and the head coach at Hofstra for 16 seasons (1990–2005, 119–62–2). After retiring from Hofstra, he became a friend of the Staples program — speaking at the Gridiron Club year-end banquet and attending the 2006 dedication of the new turf field.
